Trauma can be based on single impactful incidents, or a build up of lack of safety over time. Traumatic experiences need to be shared in a safe and supportive environment in order to decrease the brains fight or flight response. More complex trauma needs to be explored and understood using an attachment framework. Whenever possible, I prefer to work with clients suffering form trauma with one or more of their loved ones present. This allows their behaviour to be understood and responded to differently, which is much more effective and efficient than only 1 hour a week. This is optional, as the client sees fit, but is encouraged.
