Abington, Pennsylvania therapist: HUGH R STEWART III, hypnotherapist
Addictions or Substance Abuse

HUGH R STEWART III

Hypnotherapist, Ph.D., ACHt.
I wrote my dissertation on "Reducing Denial In Addictions: An Alternative Integrated Group Approach." I have found that there are many alternatives to 12 step work around addictions or substance abuse. The most important piece I have taken away from 12 step and my 35 years of personal growth experience is one must surrender and let go to their Higher Power, whatever and/or who that is. In my 25 years of practice, the people that have struggled the most are people that do not want to give up control and/or do not have a higher power. I have many ways to teach letting go and surrendering if substances are making ones life unmanageable. If ones life revolves around alcohol or other substances, ones life has become unmanageable and ones higher power becomes the substance(s). It becomes way too much when one is trying to handle life's challenges all by themselves, regardless of what they may be.
