Human beings are not the only social animal, but our ability to interact with other people is a critical factor in our lives and thereby our sense of wellbeing. Social anxiety arises for many different reasons-- sometimes as a result of difficult experiences during our upbringing, resulting in low self-esteem, for example. In recent times the temptation to compare ourselves to others has been distorted by cultural phenomena such as social media. We are constantly bombarded by images of success, beauty, attainment, wealth, and so on that we can never hope to achieve. This creates an unrealistic sense of worth and worthlessness that sometimes causes us to isolate ourselves even further. Psychological counselling can help evaluate who we really are, what we want to achieve, and how we can do this. In my experience the most effective treatment is an evaluation of the root causes of social anxiety in my clients. I then design a specific coaching program to enable my clients to engage with the social world.

London, England therapist: Louise Perry, therapist
Social Anxiety

Louise Perry

Therapist, IFS UKCP HCCP BAAT
Social anxiety can make even everyday interactions feel daunting. Feeling self-conscious, fearing judgment, or struggling to find your voice can leave you feeling isolated and misunderstood. As an Art and IFS (Internal Family Systems) Psychotherapist, I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore these fears and insecurities without pressure. Together, we’ll use creative expression to give shape to the emotions and worries that may be hard to articulate. Through IFS, we can gently uncover the protective parts of you that seek to shield you from rejection or criticism, helping these parts feel seen, understood, and ultimately less fearful. At the same time, we’ll nurture the more confident, social parts of you that long to connect with others more freely. My aim is to support you as you gradually build self-confidence, reduce social discomfort, and reclaim the sense of ease and authenticity you deserve. You can learn to feel more comfortable in your own skin and at peace in the presence of others—and I’m here to help guide you on that journey.
