Bipolar disorder is a disorder and chronic mental illness that causes extreme mood shifts, energy shifts, and the ability to carry out day to day tasks. One of the hallmarks is having extremely elevated moods or highs called mania cycled with extremely low episodes of depression. During manic episodes, they may engage in impulsive and risky behaviors and during depressive episodes they may be hopeless and even suicidal. There is also hypomania which can be referenced as Bipolar II disorder. It is similar to mania, but it not as severe. Bipolar is hard to diagnose due to the varied symptoms. There is a comorbidity with alcohol and substance abuse as well and anxiety and other somatic medical conditions. Bipolar causes are genetics, abnormalities in brain function, environmental factors of trauma as well as illness. Therapy can help you deal with these concerns.
