This is actually my favorite clients to work with and the reason is simple, I feel like I'm more effective with this group than any other. There are multiple treatment processes with a strong evidence base when it comes to BPD, and I'm certified in DBT, which is the most commonly discussed and very helpful in reducing self-injury and suicide. However, when it comes to reducing emotional distress, I also use Mentalization Based Therapy techniques, and many ideas / techniques from the lifetime of research provided by Russell Meares out of Sidney University in Australia. I should make a special note about teenagers though, as there's a significant cross-over between BPD and normal teenage behavior, the real difference isn't the experience or behavior it's the level of severity. This is one reason we don't diagnose personality disorders prior to adulthood. Working with teens who have BPD traits often requires good coordination between parents and therapist.

Arlington, Virginia therapist: Andrea Miller, counselor/therapist
Borderline Personality Disorder

Andrea Miller

Counselor/Therapist, NCC
In my practice, I often integrate aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) manage their emotions and improve interpersonal relationships. Additionally, I utilize elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients develop mindfulness skills, increase psychological flexibility, and align their actions with their values, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Lastly, incorporating Narrative Therapy techniques, clients explore their life experiences and challenges from a contextual standpoint, empowering them to reconstruct their self-narrative and find new meaning in their journey towards healing and self-discovery.

Raleigh, North Carolina therapist: Grace in the Shadows, licensed professional counselor
Borderline Personality Disorder

Grace in the Shadows

Licensed Professional Counselor, PhD, MDiv, MA, NCMHC, ALMHC, VALMHC
I approach the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) with a compassionate and integrative strategy that combines psychological expertise with Christian principles. Recognizing the emotional turmoil and interpersonal challenges associated with BPD, I incorporate biblical teachings on love, grace, and forgiveness into therapy sessions. The focus is on building a therapeutic alliance that fosters trust and a sense of security. Evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may be utilized, alongside spiritual practices like prayer and scriptural reflection to address the emotional dysregulation and relational difficulties characteristic of BPD. Encouraging clients to find strength in their faith, I aim to help individuals with BPD develop healthier coping mechanisms, manage intense emotions, and cultivate a deeper understanding of their identity in Christ. Collaboration with other mental health professionals and pastoral support may also be integrated to provide comprehensive care within the framework of Christian values.
