Bold Expressions Therapy

Psychologist, Psy.D.
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, a trauma survivor, and someone with a chronic pain disorder; I approach the work that I do from a place of empathy and personal understanding. I have an intense passion for understanding personal identity and the way race, culture, class, and sexuality come together to form what we believe about ourselves and what we feel we can accomplish in our lives. Anxiety and trauma can live in our bodies - together we will create a relationship that fosters dynamic and lasting growth, tapping into undiscovered reserves of resiliency that will help navigate the past and prepare for a more hopeful future.

Are you a high-functioning mom in your 40s or 50s, juggling the demands of a successful career and parenting, but feeling overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or burnout? I'm Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver, a licensed clinical psychologist with a doctorate from Cornell University and 25 years of experience. I specialize in helping professional women like you navigate these challenges, providing a supportive space to explore your feelings and develop effective coping strategies. My approach addresses the root causes of your symptoms while empowering you to set healthy boundaries, manage toxic relationships, and engage in guilt-free self-care. Whether you're dealing with emotional abuse, narcissistic partners, or the emotional toll of chronic illnesses like Lyme disease, I am here to help you break free from generational trauma, assert your needs, and reclaim your well-being. With a passion for working with moms, I understand the unique challenges you face, from navigating menopause, caring for aging parents or dealing with their death, to dealing with the pressures of perfectionism and people-pleasing. My comprehensive approach is designed to help you find balance, joy, and fulfillment in both your personal and professional life. Sound Mind Sound Body LLC

Psychologist, MPsy, PsyD
The concept of Sound Mind Sound Body LLC is based on an Ancient Greek proverb that in order to be truly healthy, one must be healthy in both mind and body-if there is an imbalance, there is less fulfillment in one’s life. My goal is to help you to achieve that balance. There is an obvious emphasis in attaining physical health, and too often, there is less emphasis on the importance of mental health. In particular, how mental health can be impacted by physical health, and how physical health can impact mental health. Whether you experience chronic illness, trauma, identity issues (sexual orientation, ethnicity, the roles we play)-these are all areas that can affect one’s overall health. As a clinical psychologist, I have years of experience working in all these areas and hope to serve you to improve your well being. As someone who also struggles with chronic illness, specifically Crohn's Disease and PSC, my personal experience can also be helpful in improving understanding and treatment. Asking for help is hard, especially when you are in pain or feeling isolated. It's a brave step to reach out for help. I strive to help you find your healthiest self and to improving your quality of life. Feel free to e-mail: drwells@smsb-llc.com

Psychologist, Psy.D.
When deciding to see a therapist, it can be extremely challenging to choose someone to work with. I hope to be there with you in therapy as you work to discover new levels self-understanding, compassion, and insight. Most individuals decide to start therapy after encountering emotional distress that has left them overwhelmed, and as though they have lost control of their life. I work collaboratively with my clients to find ways in which they are able to regain a sense of control, empowerment, and purpose in their lives. Important to our work will be the concept that our relationship, and the exploration of that relationship, will help you make discoveries about other important relationships in your life. Although this work can be challenging at times, it can lead to improvements in your social interactions, mood, and anxiety. While I have enjoyed working with a wide variety of individuals, I specialize in LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy, ADHD, anxiety, depression, chronic shame, couples/relationship challenges, and non-traditional relationships. I am currently seeing new clients in my Dupont Circle office, and I look forward to answering any of your questions.
